Universal Transit Pass at NAIT
by Carlin Burton
NAIT has an opportunity to get the universal transit pass. It will be 110 dollars added to every student’s tuition each semester. The cost of the U-pass will go up each following semester till it finally peaks at 140. Bus passes cost roughly 70 dollars a month so the U-pass will save transit users money every semester. The U-pass can be used on Strathcona County Transit, St. Albert Transit and ETS. NAITSA president Geoff Tate says the U-pass may encourage people to use transit solving a big problem here at NAIT.
“The plan is that people have paid for it, essentially they will start using transit more and you get less parking problems here at NAIT, and the world is a better place.”
Starting tomorrow there will be a U-pass referendum where you can vote either for or against the U-pass. NAITSA President Geoff Tate says the voting is easy.
“It’s an online process identical to the senate and the executive elections. You go online to naitsa.ca, you hit the vote now button. It’s as easy as looking it up online, hitting the vote now button and having your student ID ready.”
For the U-pass to go through two out of every three votes have to be for it. Voting starts Friday, March 19th, and runs a full week until Friday the 26th giving students plenty of time to vote. For more information, or to get involved in either the “Yes” or “No” campaign check out naitsa.ca/upass.
